what can I do as a Self-Taught Archaeologist?
I’ve heard of many famous Self-Taught Archaeologists who have never been to school or any Archaeological Courses or programs, yet they can excavate and go where Archaeologists go. How can I do this as a Self-Taught Archaeologist?
Some of the best archaeologists I have worked with over the last 21+ years started out this way. Any archaeologist worth their salt never stops learning – so perhaps You Can look at the answers above mine as an encouragement to get out there and work with ‘us professionals’ an to share what you’ve learned and vice-versa! Perhaps such experience will further encourage you to complete a professional degree program so that you can help build the professional and scholarly communities we all benefit from!
Your best bet is to get involved in your state’s archaeological society. State societies are generally a combination of avocationals (such as yourself) and professionals who respect each other, work together, present and publish their results. Volunteer operations are usually overseen by qualified professionals, but at least you won’t be treated as a ’second class citizen’ because you do not currently have a degree.
